"Badge"

Like a badge that I wear over my heart
a shield to protect it from harm
like an actor that works though his part
wishing he was inside where it's safe and warm

like a promise I made so long ago
to keep to the path where I wanted to go
sometimes the way is hard and the going is slow
I'll get there someday
this much I know
Like a knife that cuts both ways
it's sharp on both sides you gotta take care
All of my life and all of my days
I've been a cut up and they said I just didn't care
Well I care a whole lot for the earth and the children
I care a whole lot for the truth
It's all here written
on the walls of this phone booth
So I dropped in a dime and gave you a call
your number was scratched here right on this wall
thank you for taking my call

lIke a badge that I wear over my heart
a shield to protect it from harm
a bulwark that's made of my art
as I came into town from the farm
